What is Grants.gov?
Grants.gov was established as a governmental resource named the E-Grants Initiative, part of the President's 2002 Fiscal Year Management Agenda to improve government services to the public: "Agencies will allow applicants for federal Grants to apply for and ultimately manage grant funds online through a common web site, simplifying grants management and eliminating redundancies."

  • A single source for finding grant opportunities.
  • A standardized manner of locating and learning more about funding opportunities.
  • A single, secure and reliable source for applying for Federal grants online.
  • A simplified grant application process with reduction of paperwork.
  • A unified interface for all agencies to announce their grant opportunities, and for all grant applicants to find and apply for those opportunities.

    Grants.gov Anomalies
  • Why can’t I see all of the grant applications that I submitted in "Track My Application"? Login Name Case Sensitivity:
If you login to use Track My Application with a username in capital letters, you will be able to only view records of grants submitted in which you entered your username in capital letters. If you login with a username in lower case letters, you will be able to only view records of those grant applications submitted in which you entered your username in lower case letters.
To avoid logging in twice to use the Track My Application feature, it is best to be consistent when you login. When you login to Grants.gov to submit an application and then login to use the Track My Application feature, you can use capital or lower case letters to enter login information. You should login to Grants.gov to submit an application the same way you login to use the Track My Applications feature. This means that if you use lower case letters to login and submit an application, you should also use lower case letters to login and use Track My Application.

Two methods exist to support the application or submission process - PureEdge vs. Adobe:
1.) For each computer used to construct and submit an application, install an application named PureEdge then download the application package from Grants.gov designed for PureEdge
2.) Download the application package from Granst.gov and use a specific version of Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat to construct and submit the application

    Grants.gov Self-help Information

  • Double click to open a form- Still cannot do this. Adobe version makes you move the forms to the mandatory field in order to work on them. But with Adobe you can have the pages viewed in the Pages tab in order to see all the pages and select from there. G.Gov response: There is a change request in to make it a double click.
  • Check for Errors gives only one at a time. - Adobe shows at least 4, with location
Budget: must complete each year before allowed to go to next year - Not fixed.
  • Key Person: must complete each person before allowed to begin next person - Not fixed.
  • Key Person: If you remove a person, the following entries do not slide forward. You must re-enter each one. Also, if you remove a person, you can not longer get to those that follow.
  • Print Feature - Want to print entire proposal with attachments. In Adobe, you can print entire forms set without extra pages, but you cannot print attachments at the same time. There is an Adobe feature, that allows you to list all of the attachments at the bottom of the screen in the Attachment tab. You can print from this tab.
  • Reuse of applications - Not fixed. For some fields in Adobe there is the option to remember the previous information that was filled in for a field and you can select from that pull down list to create the new application.
  • Cannot save by page, must go to first page to save - With Adobe you can click Save on every page. Uncertain on how this will work with documents on a shared server.
  • Some attachments are hidden when you view the form. With Adove, all attachments now show up (as noted above). On the Other Attachments section (for example) all the attachments now show so you know there are attachments included.
  • Application is a single entity - still cannot break up the application to allow various people to work on parts.
  • Duplicate budget info. - Once year one is created, should be able to duplicate out years.
  • Symbols/Greek letters - can put it in but the agency may not be able to see it.
  • Key Persons on budget - need to be able to remove a person from a specific year without removing them from the other years.
  • Auto fills cannot be corrected once entered - example budget and DUNS - this has been corrected in Adobe.
  • Grants.gov needs to establish an applicant user group to give advice on both the new system and on updates that are suggested by the user community. If not so allowed, then they need a systematic process for users to suggest changes and then report on decisions.
